Wow! Click! Developing Old and New Literacies through Working with Comics in the Primary Classroom

This paper is based on some of the findings from a three-year research project aiming to develop a model for media education and multliteracies for Austrian primary schools and will focus on the reading and writing of comics across the curriculum. Children in 15 primary classes were studying language, visual codes and narratives through the reading and the production of comics, using both traditional and digital technologies (pen and paper, digital photography, computer, ComicLife), developing an increasing understanding of the multimodal nature of comics. Working with comics also supported a scaffolded approach to learning about key concepts of the moving image (story, setting, sound, character, camera, colour).
